Screen time during quarantine. Quarantine is difficult. Staying indoors 24*7 with young children is all the more difficult. Children need social, face to face engagements, physical play with their friends which is not possible during this period. This has led to a remarkable increase in screen time for children as well as adults. Staying together morning, noon and night, going to work as well as school in the same house is taking a toll on family relationships. In these hard times, it’s alright to relax the rules of screen time a bit. But that does not mean unfettered access to screens at all possible times. It means setting a ‘play diet’ by modelling it for children. What is this ‘Play Diet’? LearningWorks for Kids has developed this concept of a Play diet. It is a recipe of essential activities for children's learning and psychological adjustment that recognizes the importance of a variety of play for child development. A healthy Play Diet consists of a balance of physical, social, creative, unstructured, and digital play and is important for every child and adult. These diets are individualized for every person according to his/her age, requirements, seasons etc. How to achieve this ‘Play Diet’? It is important as adults to model correct behaviors for children. Make time to exercise; talk to friends and family; engage in a hobby; take care of yourself psychologically and spiritually; and use screens to work, relax, and communicate with others. Next, create the expectation that everyone in the family will engage in daily physical, social, creative, unstructured, and digital play activities. Physical Play: Take a family walk every day, no excuses. It can be in the society, terrace or the parking lot of your house. It can also be playing running games in the house! This is best done at a regularly scheduled time. Social Play: Video call family members or family friends each night before dinner. Creative Play: Do something new every day. Your kids have more time on their hands, so have them try something new. Try a new recipe, read a book, do some craft activity. Engage in a new house improvement project with the children. Unstructured Play: Take a few minutes each day to relax, stretch, daydream, make a plan for the future, and appreciate nature and the spring season. Look out the window!! Digital Play: This is where your kids will tell you what they want to do. Allow age-appropriate game play and think about playing with them. Playing video games as a family is fun! Hope these tips help everyone to keep sane and turn this quarantine into a fruitful one! Stay at home, stay safe!
